Dog Grooming Senior Dog

GOT AN ELDERLY POOCH?

One of the greatest privileges of our profession is bearing witness to the passage of time. Clients bring their dogs to us when they are wiggly puppies, and seemingly within the blink of an eye, they have matured into adolescents, adults, and finally seniors.

Grooming is just as important for senior dogs as it is for younger dogs and puppies. Owners may worry about hurting or upsetting older dogs, but issues caused by a lack of grooming—such as matted hair, skin infections, and ingrown toe nails—will result in additional pain and stress for them.

As dogs age, groomers must pay close attention to any new issues they may acquire. Senior dogs are delicate. They may not have good balance, and standing for long durations will tire them and put pressure on their joints. Senior dogs often develop arthritis and anxiety, and they also tend to become less tolerant of brushing and scissoring around their faces. Concessions need to be made.

This means that sometimes groomers can no longer give senior dogs the cute and creative haircuts they sported when they were younger, and they must transition them into what we refer to as “comfort grooms”—haircuts that emphasize comfort over aesthetic.

Please note that if dogs develop serious health conditions such as severe anxiety or congestive heart failure, or if they are unable to stand, the Urban Hound spa staff will refer them to veterinary hospitals who have groomers in-house. This decision is made solely for the safety and well-being of the dog. Our facility does not have a vet on-site, and if an emergency were to happen, we would need to transport the dog to the nearest emergency clinic.

At the Urban Hound spa, we will always be upfront when communicating with clients about the health and safety of their senior dogs. And if we end up referring them to a groomer at a veterinary clinic, it isn’t because we don’t want to groom “old” dogs. It is because we recognize our limitations, and we know when dogs would be better served by a groomer at a facility that is better equipped to handle them.

We ask that all clients who have a senior dog or a dog with a medical condition sign our senior pet/medical release waiver.

How long does it take to groom a dog?

We request 4 hours for any dog grooming service (excluding walk-in nail trims), regardless of the type of service.

At what age should a puppy go to the groomer?

Puppies can start puppy grooming as early as four months, and they should be seen no later than six months. Our Puppy 101 service helps ease puppies into the grooming process, which can be overwhelming due to new smells, sounds, and sights in a grooming salon. Depending on the dog, they may need only one Puppy 101 session or several before their first full haircut. We also provide tips on how to help your puppy acclimate to grooming at home.

What happens if you cut puppy hair too early?

Nothing. Puppy coat naturally changes texture between six months and a year.

How often should dog nails be trimmed?

Dog nails should be trimmed every 3-6 weeks, although some people trim them once a week. Regular dog walks on sidewalks or hiking on granite can naturally file down their nails.

What happens if you wait too long to cut dog nails?

Waiting too long to trim dog nails can cause several problems, including:
  • Nails growing into pads, causing pain
  • Toes becoming splayed, which affects gait, reduces traction, and injures tendons, and ultimately results in permanent deformity

What types of dogs do you groom the most/specialize in?

We offer dog grooming to nearly almost every breed, but some of the most common breeds that we groom are:

  • Doodles
  • Golden retrievers
  • Bernese Mountain Dogs
  • Cavaliers
  • Schnauzers
  • Shih tzus
  • Yorkies
  • Maltese
  • Westies
  • Cairn terriers
  • Labs
  • Pugs
  • Frenchies
  • Cockapoos
  • Cavachons
  • Other mixes

What time of year is best to get your dog groomed?

We recommend dog grooming every 3-6 weeks throughout the year.

What should I do if my dog hates the groomers?

The best approach is to bring your dog more frequently so it becomes better accustomed to the grooming process.

Do you express anal glands?

The Urban Hound spa staff does not express anal glands. We recommend that anal gland expression be done internally by a veterinarian.
