Why choose the Urban Hound spa for dog grooming?
At the Urban Hound spa, we prioritize personal connections and strong client relationships. The safety and well-being of your dog is our highest priority. Our proactive care extends to promptly notifying you of any changes in your pet’s behavior and taking immediate action if we notice any abnormalities in your dog’s coat, skin, or other areas. We maintain transparency by consulting with owners regarding issues such as matted and impacted hair, and we will never shave a dog without first discussing and obtaining written permission from owners.

GOT AN ELDERLY POOCH?
One of the greatest privileges of our profession is bearing witness to the passage of time. Clients bring their dogs to us when they are wiggly puppies, and seemingly within the blink of an eye, they have matured into adolescents, adults, and finally seniors.
Grooming is just as important for senior dogs as it is for younger dogs and puppies. Owners may worry about hurting or upsetting older dogs, but issues caused by a lack of grooming—such as matted hair, skin infections, and ingrown toe nails—will result in additional pain and stress for them.
As dogs age, groomers must pay close attention to any new issues they may acquire. Senior dogs are delicate. They may not have good balance, and standing for long durations will tire them and put pressure on their joints. Senior dogs often develop arthritis and anxiety, and they also tend to become less tolerant of brushing and scissoring around their faces. Concessions need to be made.
This means that sometimes groomers can no longer give senior dogs the cute and creative haircuts they sported when they were younger, and they must transition them into what we refer to as “comfort grooms”—haircuts that emphasize comfort over aesthetic.
Please note that if dogs develop serious health conditions such as severe anxiety or congestive heart failure, or if they are unable to stand, the Urban Hound spa staff will refer them to veterinary hospitals who have groomers in-house. This decision is made solely for the safety and well-being of the dog. Our facility does not have a vet on-site, and if an emergency were to happen, we would need to transport the dog to the nearest emergency clinic.
At the Urban Hound spa, we will always be upfront when communicating with clients about the health and safety of their senior dogs. And if we end up referring them to a groomer at a veterinary clinic, it isn’t because we don’t want to groom “old” dogs. It is because we recognize our limitations, and we know when dogs would be better served by a groomer at a facility that is better equipped to handle them.
We ask that all clients who have a senior dog or a dog with a medical condition sign our senior pet/medical release waiver.
